Another thing I noticed was that there are no teachers. People do not learn from their own experiences or from other people. The people learn everything to do with the world when they are created. They listen to certain phrases that are forever in their brain. They hear it so many times that they consider it as fact. This can relate to us today- stereotypes. Labeling a person without even knowing them because of the way we have been brought up. People learn from their parents that a certain race is evil or other things are bad. People do not learn from personal experience anymore but from what they have heard. I think that is one thing the author is trying to get across. To stop listening to the gossip and untrue stories we have been told and just learn from experiences. Anyways, those are two things I noticed about the book that I felt were important. Thanks for reading. : )

Brave New World- lessons
So first off, after reading the first couple of chapters of this book, this book is pretty crazy. Its a world, I personally would not want to be a part of. One, because they reject emotions a person has. Like when the man was talking about how the world use to be. The words he used were "Family, monogamy, romance" (40). When he said these words the boys flinched and were awed that people use to say those disgusting words. Family is considered wrong because it excludes people and every person in the population are the same. Monogamy is considered a sin because all the people share and no one belong to one person. Romance, is despised and being on autopilot and just doing things is the norm. Also, people don't say they like another person but say "you should try her." It is not an emotional statement and is now just logical opinion. People are not considered a person with a soul but a person with a body.

Yeah this book is really bizarre but I think that we tend to pick up on the moral of the story more because we are forced to pay attention to all the crazy happenings. I agree with you that the novel has taken away emotional attachments ,so the people basically treat other like property instead of human beings.I also liked your observation that the poeple in the novel have no teachers and accept opinons as facts. "There is only one thing more painful than learning from experience, and that is not learning from experience"(Laurence J. Peter). I feel that this quote descirbes how in the story the people give up acquiring knowledge and only focus on efficency.
ReplyDeleteHey Connie, I totally agree with you when you say this book is crazy. It makes it fun to read and easy to write about. I would not ever want to live in such a society as the one in the book. We are lucky to live in America where we are protected from such horrible things. Nowhere in the world do people actually make humans assembly line style in bulk, but I am sure there is sick stuff out there that we are blind to in the U.S. It is funny to see how their cussing is identical to our words that synonymous with morality. The way they view those words like “romance, family, and monogamy” makes the book enjoyable to read because it is such an opposite of our lives. I can just picture these sociopath males talking about one-night stands with women and trying new ones. It is, as you said, a complete lack of emotion and a “logical opinion”. Just like 1984, people are bodies without souls. The fact that they learn all of their knowledge by hearing it from the soft-voice spit out phrases is very weird. They cannot learn lessons from life experiences because they do not experience real life for themselves. I really like your view on how we learn things today. Kids do not have a fair shot is they grow up with prejudiced parents or role models. If a view like “[blank] people are evil” is pounded into kids’ brains, then that is all they know. People need to stop listening to gossip as well as gossiping. Not everything we read is true and that is why learning from positive role models helps to shape our minds from an early age. The good ones will not be so gullible. You have some very interesting ideas in your blog. It will be fun to see what happens at the end of the novel. See ya soon!
ReplyDeleteHey there Connie-Mae!
ReplyDeleteHmm, good stuff. Not too much to say, as Dominguez put about half your blog in the discussion. That's because you write good stuffs, and have good ideas. Which we already talked about in class...But! I did not really notice about the teachers..I wonder if they go to school? Like, the Alphas and Betas? Probably not...Huh. It makes sense as to why they don't want the families, with family ideas though..
K well...good ideas, good job explaining them too. And that's all I have to say. Bye bye, see you laters!
