Also another thing I noticed was that there is no emotion at all with the people in the New World. People do not care about each other's feelings but about what they want and desire. Like when the two guys were talking about "trying people" (46). Not talking about the other person's feelings or talking about the human soul. Just the body. When the director was reflecting on his past in the savage land, he got caught up in the moment and had to straighten himself out (97). The people consider emotion a sign of weakness and not being productive. Also when the savage was by his mother's death bed, little kids were inspecting his mother and saying she was ugly and other comments. The nurse asked the savage if he was ill because he was sad. She did not understand. Also she told him that she would kick him out if he caused more trouble by being upset. She scolds him and says "can't you behave?" (206) The book says that she was not accustomed to people actually wanting to visit someone who was dying. People avoid having emotions as much as possible and take soma and other things.
So my thesis right now is: In Huxley's Brave New World, people do not learn from personal experience and therefore do not have emotion because it contradicts what they are told.
This is just a draft for my thesis. Thanks for reading my post.
Interesting, Connie, very interesting indeed. Put together like that, I don't think anyone else will have the same idea as you. Most people probably will go with the more obvious ideas, like something about the technology or stuff like that, so I like how you are thinking a more unique thought. I really hadn't thought much about that whole personal experience bit, so I look forward to hearing more about your ideas. That's probably what we're doing tomorrow, anyway. Good stuff, you seem to know what you're doing with this. Bet your essay's going to be real good. Bye :)
ReplyDeletei agree more on the lines of Cathy. This is some pretty interesting stuff that i'm sure most people will fail to discuss in their essays. I feel you got a good topic on your hands. In your these it states that "people do not learn from personal experience and therefore do not have emotion." Well I agree on that and i think you hit that right on the money but in tackling this topic you should consider a few of the following: If people don't learn anything from experience, then can they learn anything at all? If people don't have emotion because of experience then how can their society even exist? Well this is a strong topic and im sure youll do more than fairly well. Good job! :)
ReplyDeleteOk Connie, I loved your blog. It really made me think. I liked the bit about his "emotions" or being upset was labeled as misbehaving or being ill. And the teaching of computers and how it's almost impossible to learn a new thing or accept a new idea. DEFINATELY gonna be a great essay. I'm not sure if that's the exact wording you wanted on your thesis, but I would reword it somehow... it just didn't grab me... meh. Good job Connie! Sorry this was late.
