Post post modernism
Dr. Alan Kirby believes that post-modernism is dead and that something new is surfacing. There is a more technical thing coming. As the video (Did You Know) showed with facts that the world is producing a lot of information and new technology every 2 years. People are learning and being trained for jobs that don't even exist right now. The belief now is how much information can you possible have. How quick can you get to information. Google has trillions of searches it has every day. It is exceeding every year as people seek for information. Kirby says said post-modernism was "one reads, watches, listens. " But now people use "phones, clicks, presses, surfs, chooses, moves, and downloads." No longer to people just absorb things. There is now an action that must happen and people want to be filled with knowledge. But we don't know what to do with this power. America is loosing its leadership in the world. Japan, China, and India are become the world leaders in education and technology. We are not socially capable of having more information produced. There are so many other problems that we have. Some people don't know how to read or write and we are wanting to add more technology and "help" people become more intelligent by having unlimited doors to information? But of course it may not even matter if someone knows how to read or write, as long as they can text and click a mouse. I see toddlers playing with phones and surfing the web. I think we need to go back and try to solve some problems that we have. How can China soon be the #1 english speaking country? (Did You Know?) Crazy! television, internet, phones, and ect. All require a certain amount of activity. It seriously takes no intelligence to find information. Wikipedia has information that is totally untrue. Articles that can be edited by anyone. Anyone can write on a page you put up and change the meaning. Its like a Cat's Cradle. its a never ending cycle and it just becomes more complex and you don't know what to do with it but just keep adding more and more to it.

Connie!!
ReplyDeleteWell, very insightful blog. I really enjoyed it. You brought up some very good points that I didn’t even stop to consider. I really like how you analyzed how we are becoming more and more reliant on technology. And not only is the older generation, but so is the young pre-adolescent age. For example, when you said,” I see toddlers playing with phones and surfing the web.” This is so right. People are becoming more and more dependent on technology, even young children are. Is that the type of lifestyle we want children to have? That technology is ultimately the “center” that holds the world together? I think not.
Also, I really enjoyed your “Wikipedia” example. Not only does technology control most of our knowledge, but who in fact is “in charge” of this technology? Ultimately, anyone can put anything on the internet, and we Americans take it as actual facts and substance! This is crazy!
Anyways, I really enjoyed your blog. Fantastic job!
Great job Connie! Lots of good stuff in there. The end was really insightful, comparing it all to a Cat's Cradle. We're just making society more and more complicated, never reaching anything definitive. Also, how people are becoming dependent on the internet. And, who is responsible for all of this techonology? Makes you wonder. I also agree that "technology" is not this center we are all searching for. I don't want MY children to grow up not knowing how to do simple things.
ReplyDeleteGreat job Connie!
Hey Connie!
ReplyDeleteGreat blog! It was very interesting. You made some really good points. One thing that especially stuck out to me was that you stated, “Some people don't know how to read or write and we are wanting to add more technology and "help" people become more intelligent by having unlimited doors to information?” I agree with you that it is ironic that technology is supposed to make people accomplish more, but in reality, it has just dumbed down society. I think that people have abused technology so that it has become corruptive.
Another point that never occurred to me but that I totally with is that “I see toddlers playing with phones and surfing the web. I think we need to go back and try to solve some problems that we have.” Parents need to read to young children and not just let them play video games all day; otherwise, their kids will be behind in school before they even start. Why do little kids even need cell phones? I mean if they have not even started preschool, its not like they need to contact their parents, since they are most likely with them the majority of the time.
Anyways, I enjoyed reading your blog it was awesome! See ya tomorrow.
Hey Connie! I really enjoyed your blog and I totally your points that you made were strong and relatable! It is crazy how we are desiring to expand our knowledge, but people are trying to expand technology not realizing that technology is more likely to do the work and learn for us. It, overall, decreases our learning enhancement! I liked how you mentioned that China is close to being the number one country in speaking English. How is it that the United States is supposed to be the majority English, but another nationality of a different country is already conquering our own language? It is insane how other countries are more on top of things that in the USA.
ReplyDeleteI also liked how you related the article to Cat's Cradle. I don't think I thought of that until I read your blog! How you said, "Its a never ending cycle and it just becomes more complex and you don't know what to do with it but just keep adding more and more to it." That is right on the nose!!! We keep creating technology and making more complex devices but in the end is it really helping human knowledge?
Awesome Job and I enjoyed reading your blog!
